Frequently Asked Questions
What is discharge time of the Fire Safety Stick?
There are currently two options available – 50 seconds min. and 100 seconds min.
Is it safe to breathe in?
Yes, the Fire Safety Stick discharge is safe to breathe and is both non-corrosive and non-toxic. So it’s fine around children and pets too.
The FSS acts by interrupting the chain of combustion at the flame level (fire triangle – Heat/Fuel/Oxygen).
But, it does not remove the local oxygen levels that would prevent breathing like some other traditional extinguishers.
What are the dimensions?
The FSS50 model is 27cm by 3cm and weighs 215 grams.
The FSS100 model is 33 cm by 3cm and weighs 365 grams.
Does it harm the environment?
No.
The Fire Safety Stick has no global warming potential and no ozone depletion potential.
The discharge simply dissipates into the air.
The discharge also does not leave behind any damaging or corrosive material.
Once used completely, the FSS can be broken apart and easily recycled.
Is it safe to be used in a confined room?
Yes! We have tested activating the Fire Safety Stick in a small closed room, that was 3 meters by 3 meters in size. Both visibility and breathing were not impeded.
Of course in a real fire situation, smoke inhalation from the fire itself would be the danger.
Does it leave behind any mess?
Very, very little!
The discharge/gas from the Fire Safety Stick is totally clean and will not leave any damaging or harmful residue.
However, a chemical reaction does take place which occasionally expels a small trace amount of soot from the casing, also not harmful or damaging, and is easy to clean from any hard surfaces.
Does it require servicing?
No.
The Fire Safety Stick does not require any professional servicing.
We do however recommend a regular visual check/maintenance. This includes checking that the 'striker cap' is still attached, the 'black tip' is still hard and present, and there is no sign of adverse handling or previous activation.
The initial cost is too high!
We understand that for some the initial cost can seem too high, but we would like for you to see a comparison against another 'cheaper' alternative.
A powder extinguisher and a fire blanket, which would cover the same amount of fire types as the FSS, would roughly cost £25. However, many people overlook the fact that every 5 years the powder extinguisher and the fire blanket would need replacing. So, if we looked at the overall cost of 15 years, the cost would equal the Fire Safety Stick.
This is assuming that you do not service your extinguisher and blanket every 12 months. If you did include the servicing costs of an extinguisher and a fire blanket on a yearly basis, the Fire Safety Stick would become the far more cost-effective option.
What is the shelf-life?
15 years!
The Fire Safety Stick is tested and approved for 15 years of shelf-life as of 2022.
Does it have a BSi Kitemark?
Existing BSi approvals for extinguishers (EN3) are based upon traditional 'pressurised' extinguishers, with specific guidelines for pressure gauges, corrosion tests etc. However, because the Fire Safety Stick is a new unique system, that is NOT pressurised, current guidelines do not apply to it.
We are working to get new guidelines to accommodate the Fire Safety Stick, but this process will not happen quickly.
Can it be recycled/disposed of easily?
Yes!
The Fire Safety Stick, once used completely, is made from an aluminium tube and a plastic handle. Both can be easily separated and recycled responsibly.
Can it be accidentally activated?
The two components necessary for the activation of the FSS are placed on opposite ends of the device, rendering accidental ignition during transport and storage impossible.
Also, the FSS is not 'pressurised' unlike traditional extinguishers, so if the FSS is dropped in any way, as long as the black tip and striker are still present, it will be fine for use.
Can extreme temperatures effect the Fire Safety Stick?
Storage of the Fire Safety Stick has been verified as between from -10°C to +50°C – in a standard test.
Usability has been confirmed separately at -140°F to +320°F.
What should I do in the event of a fire?
You and your family's safety must always come first, don’t be a hero! The fire brigade often gives the advice of just get out, call them and stay out! And, we agree.
However, if the fire has just started, is still manageable, you feel confident, and safe to do so, then you can tackle it with a Fire Safety Stick extinguisher.
Something to think about!
Often many people panic and use the incorrect type of extinguisher for that type of fire. This usually makes it much worse. This is the reason why the fire brigade advises you against using extinguishers if not properly trained.
The Fire Safety Stick removes the guesswork and it's much safer, as it works on 5 types of fire, so there is far less dangerous gambling about whether you have the right extinguisher. It lasts much longer and you can even leave it to continue repressing that fire, whilst you escape to safety.
